State of the Union Addresses
The seventh president of the U. S. , Andrew Jackson (1767 - 1845) was the first westerner to reach White House. He was born in humble circumstances and orphaned at the age of fourteen, but he educated himself as a lawyer and prospered: Jackson built a large mansion and owned many slaves. After his triumphs in the War of 1812 he was regarded as a war hero. As President, Jackson always strived to act as an unmediated representative of the general public. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
